When Do You Need Recreation Vehicle Insurance?

Recreational Vehicles (RVs) include motor homes, trailers, fifth wheels, and caravans.

When choosing an insurance policy for your RV, it is important to find one that meets all the lender and state requirements, it is also essential that you find a policy that provides enough coverage.

Let’s look at what coverage RV insurance policies offer, and see when an insurance policy is required.

Required Coverage:

Specific cases where insurance is required on your RV are:

  • If your RV is a motor home
  • If your RV is financed
  • If you are renting the RV
Motor Homes

If your RV is a motor home, and you plan to drive it on the road, it is required by law that you have liability insurance. Full coverage is optional on your motor home, unless it is being financed and it is required by the lender.

Financed RV

If your RV is being financed, your lender will most likely require you to have full coverage. Make sure your RV is properly insured before you take it out on the road.

Rental RV

When a rental RV is in your possession, it is your responsibility, so it is important to make sure your rental RV is covered. Most rental companies will automatically include rental insurance, or require you to take out a separate policy.

Optional Coverage:

Additional RV coverage isn’t required, but it is an important precaution. Additional coverage includes:

  • Roadside Assistance
  • Full-time RV Coverage
  • Personal Effects Coverage
  • Comprehensive Coverage
Roadside Assistance

Having an RV towed can cost three times as much as it does to tow as a vehicle. If your RV breaks down and your insurance policy doesn’t include roadside assistance, this can be a considerable expense.

Full-Time RV Coverage

Similar to a home insurance policy on your house, this is an extensive policy that will cover your RV if you are using it as a permanent residence.

Personal Effects Coverage

This coverage insures items inside the RV, and can provide coverage in case of theft, damage, or fire.

Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive policies are designed to provide coverage for the RV, in case of damage, theft or accident.
