What to Do After a Vehicle Accident: Katy Texas Insurance

While nobody plans on being in an accident, knowing what to do in case one happens can help you to be prepared.

Once you have assessed that everyone is okay, here are some important steps that should be taken after an accident.

Safety First

After an accident, the last thing you would want is for another car to collide with your vehicle. If it is at all possible, try to pull your vehicle over to the side of the road. If the vehicle cannot be moved, turn the hazard lights on and make sure the vehicle is visible.

Exchange Information

Exchange insurance information with the other driver. Make sure you get their name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver license number, and license plate. While it’s important to remain calm and stay polite, even in the aftermath of an accident, be careful not to admit fault even if you think it might have been yours. Be sure to also get the contact information of potential witnesses for future reference.

Photograph the Damage

Most phones these days have built in cameras. Some people have emergency kits in their car that include disposable cameras -whatever technique you choose to take, be sure to photograph the damage done to the vehicles.

Ensure That You Have Adequate Coverage

This step should be taken before your accident. Find out what level of protection your insurance offers in case of an accident. It’s important to make sure you have adequate coverage, before it’s too late. You may want to increase your coverage limits, or check with your insurer to see if your policy includes things like towing, or a rental car while yours is being repaired.

Submit Your Claim

Finally, don’t forget to submit the claim to your insurance agency. While minor damage may not seem worth submitting, postponing a claim isn’t always the best idea. For instance - if the accident was not your fault, or the driver of the other vehicle agrees to pay for the work at the scene of the accident - they could change their mind later, and it would then be difficult to file a claim.
