Insurance Options for Home Based Businesses
Insurance When Working From Home
More and more Americans are leaving their 8-5 jobs for the flexibility of working from home.
But just because you are working from home, doesn’t mean you are exempt from the need for insurance. While you probably have a homeowner’s policy (or a renters insurance policy) in many cases, homeowners insurance won’t extend to cover your business, even if it is under the same roof.
If you have a home-based business, or work as a freelancer, it’s important to take the time to ensure that you have sufficient insurance. Here are three basic, yet important insurance policies that you may want to consider:
- Rider to Homeowners Insurance One of the most economical types of home-based insurance is to add on a rider that extends your homeowner’s policy to provide coverage for your business. This type of insurance is ideal for one-person business, without a lot of costly equipment, or many business-related visitors. It’s also best if you don’t need insurance to cover a major loss.
- Contents Insurance If you have expensive business-related tools and equipment, such as your computers, printers, or gear, you may want to take out additional coverage for your contents. It’s a good idea to talk with your insurance agent to see just which belongings are insured under your home insurance policy, and which ones need additional coverage.
- Liability Insurance While your general home insurance policy may offer some coverage against liabilities, when running your own business comes with an additional liabilities and your home insurance won’t extend to provide coverage for business-related third party injuries or damage. It’s important that you talk with your agent to see if additional liability insurance should be purchased. This is especially important if your line of work involves a lot of customers or people coming on and off the premises.
